Here I was,
a 40 year old who had Diabetes since 1971 (yes, over 30 years) and
being told I could go on a course that lasted a week to learn about
diabetes.
I had always considered that I was doing all right with my control,
but my tests were often referred to as could be better.
I have had some hypos, and also been on the high side, but generally
thought I was doing OK.
Never-the-less, I decided I would give DAFNE a try, and agreed to
go on the course, the first one to be held in Derby. I was informed
before the course that the content would fill in the gaps
of knowledge that I was unsure of. I hoped that I might also find
out if there were any advances made that would make life easier.
During the course, I was informed about many issues to do with diabetes.
We spent a lot of time discussing carbohydrates in food; before the
course I did not know about the Glycaemic Index, and how it can be
used to aid control.
We spent time discussing the different types of insulin and ways in
which it can be taken. We also covered problem areas like illness,
pregnancy and sport. Although I was aware of some of this already,
the course went into some depth, enabling us to understand what was
happening and what we should be doing to remedy any problems without
the need to contact GPs or clinics.
The information was handed out in verbal and written format, and was
so interesting, I didnt realise how much I didnt
know.
Along with the other participants on the course, twice a day we discussed
together our own test results and food intake. We tried to come up
with reasons for any unusual blood glucose readings. As
the course progressed, we were more able to help each other with possible
reasons for highs and lows, we also went together
for meals in order to get advice and guidelines as to what our carbohydrate
intake was and how much insulin we should be taking to match it.
With all the information that was given, a week was only just long
enough.
Following the course, I changed the way I controlled my diabetes (Yes,
controlled my diabetes, not let it control me). My blood tests, that
I have always done regularly, have improved greatly. Diabetes is not
an exact science, I have still had days when my tests are high, or
I have had a hypo, but I feel that I am aware usually as to why things
have gone astray, and that reason is usually due to my own miscalculation
or forgetfulness.
The course has given me the knowledge that I can control my diabetes,
and live a normal life at the same time, the important part being
the NORMAL LIFE. I eat whatever I want, whenever I want to.
I am an active sportsman, which has got easier since the course, and
I have also lost some weight that I have wanted to lose for some time.
The course gave me the confidence to change my diet to make this possible,
and all this whilst keeping healthy and fit.
I find now that life is so different, so much better. Even down to
the fact that my check-ups at the diabetic clinic are now only every
year, as my control is so much better.
I would strongly recommend DAFNE to other diabetics; it has made such
an improvement to my life that I didnt feel needed improving.
If only I could have gone on a course like this years ago, things
could have been so much easier.
