The DAFNE programme is based on the Intensive Insulin
Therapy (ITT) education programme developed at end of the 1970s by the diabetes
team at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Diabetes in Düsseldorf, Germany,
led by the late Professor Michael Berger.
Professor Bergers team showed that the education programme produced
a long lasting improvement in blood glucose control without an increase
in severe hypoglycaemia. The results were so impressive that since the 1980s
this approach for the management of Type 1 diabetes has been widely adopted
within the German healthcare system and is also widely used in other parts
of Europe.
If you would like to find out more about the background to DAFNE, the work
performed by Professor Berger and his team and other research carried out
in Europe, you might like to read the published scientific papers. [1-10]
