The DAFNE approach has been the focus of an economic
evaluation which was submitted to NICE and has been published as a full
paper in Diabetic Medicine. [12]
The authors used the available data to develop an economic model, incorporating
the costs of the intervention and the economic benefits of delaying or preventing
complications. The model shows that the 5-day course begins to pay for itself
within 5 years mainly due to savings in the cost of treating diabetic nephropathy.
The publication of the DAFNE trial has generated considerable interest in
the approach. The Diabetes NSF [15] implementation document
which calls for structured education programmes for all those with diabetes,
highlights the DAFNE approach and the programme has received a specific
mention from NICE. [13] |
