On the 30 March 2011, NICE launched the quality standard for diabetes in adults which consists of 13 quality statements which will apply across the NHS in England.

The DAFNE programme is delighted that the first quality standard is access to structured education, which meets the nationally agreed criteria, which are:

  • Philosophy, an agreed written statement
  • Curriculum which is structured, evidence based and written down
  • Trained educators whose understanding of the theories underpinning, and competency in delivering the curriculum have been assessed
  • Quality assured
  • Audited

DAFNE meets these national criteria and is currently the only national education programme structured for people with Type 1 diabetes that does so.

The NICE quality standard defines what high quality diabetes care should include and will inform the planning and delivery of high quality care in England, supporting the delivery of evidence based services in addition to informing people about the care they should expect to receive.  Further information about the Diabetes in Adult Quality Standard can be obtained from the NICE website.
