Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII), or pump therapy, is expensive but there is pressure to provide them to people with Type 1 diabetes on the basis of largely uncontrolled research. Proving that benefit from CSII is due to the training that accompanies pump treatment could save money but is only possible in the context of high quality skills training.
We will conduct a small pilot study compared DAFNE training plus CSII against standard DAFNE which uses multiple injection therapy. A specific DAFNE curriculum, appropriate resources and train the trainers programme will be developed for the DAFNE plus CSII course and evaluated during the pilot. The experiences and results of this pilot study will be used to inform the REPOSE randomised control trial.
